Advancing policy and technological solutions in modern UI
The Coalition’s mission is to advance technological solutions at the federal and state levels with coordination between the two to ensure all eligible unemployed workers, and especially those from BIPOC groups that have historically been excluded from UI, receive their benefits on time.
The Coalition work has developed over the past four years bringing together a nation-wide network of advocates, experts, technologists, and unions in bi-weekly meetings, annual convenings, a quarterly UI tech developments newsletter, and actionable short-form publications.
What We Do
Improving policy outcomes related to technology: As a convenor of practitioners who work on UI from many different perspectives, advocacy groups, in house program leaders, policymakers, and technology vendors, allows members to understand the issues from different points of view leading to more informed ideas, approaches and policies related to technology implementation.
Creating unique and new collaborations: Because the Coalition brings together individuals and organizations involved in UI but otherwise siloed from one another, it has produced unique collaborations.
Creating a common conversation around UI Tech: With Coalition members as practitioners in implementing UI at a legal, policy or technical level, the Coalition is helping develop a common framework and language in discussing delivery improvements in the UI system.
Our Impact
Improving policy outcomes related to technology: Collaborating with the DOL Office of Unemployment Insurance Modernization on shaping its efforts at UI modernization approach;
Creating unique and new collaborations: Coalition members learned about alternatives to commercial identity verification options and were able to propose them within their states as an improved solution.
Creating a common conversation around UI Tech: A vendor working on the New Jersey UI modernization was able to openly discuss challenges and learn about specific solutions from others to bring those ideas back to their modernization work.
Including worker voice in designing UI Tech: In the past two annual convenings, frontline staff from Colorado and Washington have shared their experiences on how UI tech should be improved for better delivery of benefits. These conversations on the importance of worker-centered UI modernization greatly enhanced Coalition discussions.
